For the love of the game

Galerie Timonier

New York, NY

September 12 - October 11, 2025

For the Love of the Game explored memory, loss, and transcendence through basketball. The gallery was configured as a space both monastic and athletic. Ten ceramic basketballs rested directly on the floor, harkening back to a hardwood court. Stripped of their capacity for flight, the balls were frozen, their fragility shaped through fire.

Memory also appeared through archival and textual interventions. Sosa presented Forty Million Dollar Slaves by William C. Rhoden and In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez on a pedestal-cum-altar. Fifty butterflies, including Painted Ladies, were released in the gallery and eventually across New York City, providing a counterpoint to the permanence of ceramics and a meditation on fragility, endurance, and migration. Collectively, these elements positioned the work within a dialogue on embodiment, memory, and resilience.*
